Ultrarunning

Tell us about yourself:
I have always been keen on endurance sport.  I spent many years mountain climbing before discovering endurance running and associated events.  I even biked 24 hours non stop when cycle touring at the age of 16!  Today I love competing as well as the rewards of keeping fit and active.  I find that meeting positive like-minded people very motivating and am excited by the opportunities that the future provides.

How did you get into your sport?

My partner Rachel encouraged me to run my first half marathon to keep her company back in 1996.  It seems like a long time ago now ... in those days we used to eat steak sandwiches before a big race!  After completing a Kepler Challenge in 1997, I read the Ultrarunners newsletter and was amazed by what people can achieve in races beyond the marathon.

Biggest achievement so fat and why:
Six hour 58 minute 100km time in Seoul, Korea 2006 with the bonus of a top 10 placing.  It was very satisfying to be ahead of runners who have been proven world class athletes over the last few years.

Best non-competitive achievement was a 22 hour mountain run from St Arnaud to Lewis Pass then biking 190km back to the car via the Rainbow Road.  Great fun!

Fav Product: REPLACE HYDRATION

Reason: "Replace Hydration is great for all the day to day training fluid replacement as it provides carbohydrate and electrolytes.  It tastes great too!"

I'm also a fan of these products:
Approach to training and nutrition
I believe that food should be enjoyed with the right attitude towards quantity and quality.  I avoid highly processed food and aim to have fresh natural products where possible.  I'm continuing to work on the theory of a good breakfast follwed by a series of snacks throughout the day.  I'm a big fan of having lots of water especially when working in a busy classroom; dehydration happens overnight too so a glass before bed is a good thing.  Before training after work I think it is very important to have a good snack before heading out the door.  On returning it is also important to get stuck in a refuel in that first 10 to 15 minutes.
